Great Plague:

A plague that swept through Middle-Earth from the south-east. It occurred in the Third Age during the years 1636 and 1637. Many parts of the lands were deserted afterwards, and the watch on Mordor was abandoned. The casualties included the King of Gondor and all of his children. At the same time the White Tree died.
