There are a growing number of Tolkien related computer/video
games out there, ranging from the Lord Of The Rings Online to the various Battle
For Middle-Earth games.
Lord Of The Rings Conquest
This is the newest Tolkien-themed computer game. It came out in January 2009,
and the discussions I've seen look interesting. Apparently players can play not
only the heroes of the game but the villains as well.
The Lord of the Rings Online
I've seen a lot of good discussions of Lord of the Rings Online, and in fact,
I've contemplated
buying it, if it weren't for the fact that the online fee cards more or less
equal the price of the game. It's just too expensive for the amount of gaming
I actually do. I'm still curious about it though. Also, since the game was released,
there have been at least two expansion packs made available.
The Return Of The King
The game based on the Return of the King movie. Also put out by Electronic Arts,
who seem to have done most of the current Tolkien computer games. The link takes
you to the trailer before going to the actual game page.
The Two Towers
The game based on the Two Towers movie. Also put out by Electronic Arts, who
seem to have done most of the current Tolkien computer games.
Battle For Middle Earth II
The official site for the game Battle For Middle-Earth II, released by Electronic
Arts. This is their general site for the game, with dates for the expansion packs.
I've played the game, and it's not bad. Not especially true to Tolkien, but not
a bad game for playing. It's certainly a challenge and fun to play.
